On japan airlines website with flexible dates from the first week of october to first week of november I found round trip tickets to Tokyo for about $1200 per person from Mexico City, LAX, and Las Vegas. All go via LAX but the extra leg doesn't seem to change the price of the ticket.
www.igougo.com found a flight via Beijing for ca $800 per person.
Also consider a san francisco departure, I saw one on travelocity for $1100
